Remember that rogue US spy satellite that was a major stories in the news because it was going to come down to Earth and crash over an inhabited region releasing toxic chemicals in the atmosphere? Well, the US navy finally destroyed the satellite while still in space by firing an SM-3 missile. The missile launch and impact with the satellite is supposed to be shown in the video below. I don’t know how authentic the video is but it looks interesting. It is also good to know that the US finally found a use for their missile defense program for which the paid a massive amount of money to piece together over the years.

Quarantine has been an effective method of protecting the public from disease, and is thought to be a more effective method than drugs at preventing the spread of certain diseases-such as respiratory viruses. Although the practice of quarantine has been around for decades, there is a stigma attached which influences the people under quarantine and a public perception which plays into the problem with quarantine and the danger that can occur. A notable example of this was last year with the case of a man who was the first in 50 years to be quarantined by the CDC for a resistant strain of TB (tuberculosis) known as XDR TB a drug resistant strain. To add to this, the individual had escaped “custody” initially, again this appears to be due to the stigma associated with quarantine, the man was later “captured” it turned out that the individual did not in fact have XDR TB, nevertheless he recounted his tail as being treated like a criminal. Although the threat turned out to be false the man had traveled by plane to Europe and Canada and back again-the possibility of infecting others if he was not quarantined could arguably considered a valid reason for the quarantine.

A recent case of a more disturbing situation happened in South Africa in December 2007. 49 people were being held in a South African hospital for drug resistant TB (the details of the strain of TB have not been released). Again the treatment of these individuals appeared to be similar to the treatment of prison inmates, these patients-which is really what they are later escaped cutting through a perimeter fence. Of the 49 patients 26 returned, however 23 patients are still “on the loose”. These situations highlight the problems associated with the practice of quarantine.

Mario Raviglione, director of the WHO (World Health Organization) TB department indicated “it’s a last resort.” Arthur Caplan director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania conveyed his sentiments “There are certain circumstances when public health trumps individual rights-when it comes to protecting lives.” Exacerbating this problem, is underdeveloped countries if they even have hospitals, lack the facilities to effectively treat possibly infectious patients. furthermore, the possibility of a major outbreak in such a country would lead to problems of the feasibility of locking up thousands of individuals.

All experts and now policy makers are coming into line with the need for improvement in the use of quarantine in all countries, as Arthur Caplan notes…. “but you have to be careful. The purpose is to prevent spread of disease, not to punish people.”

But he only gets half the prize because he has to share the honor with the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. It would appear that it doesn’t take much to win a Nobel Prize these days. I’m only surprised that he didn’t get the prize for creating the Internet but I guess there is always next year. In the meantime, here is Mr. Gore explaining how his film will save us all from certain death.

Once again, government has shown that everything can be legal as long as it is profitable. In Budapest, Hungary where prostitution is a billion dollar industry annually and illegal, the government will now allow prostitutes to apply for an entrepeneur’s permit, from which the government can make a profit. The permit allows sex workers to give receipts to customers and to pay taxes. Agnes Foldi, head of the Hungarian Prostitutes Interest Protection Association acknowledges that prostitution is a “….shadow economy and this legislation will help a group of professionals.”

I see this move being similar to the continued legalization of cigarettes, as long as it can generate government revenue than it is acceptable. Granted prostitution is legal in certain countries and the Hungarian government claims this is an effort to get prostitutes into the economy, but what should be an obvious concern is the sexual slavery that occurs in such countries. Women are forced to become prostitutes and in a lot of cases children as well, yet instead of attempting to fix that problem the government seems more concerned about how to make a profit.

The Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad an invited speaker at Columbia University has raised several eyebrows, aside from the political climate regarding the war in which he has questioned the Sept 11 attacks, doubts the Holocaust and is a staunch supporter of the destruction of Israel and apparently was rumored to say death to Americans upon leaving the country, why would such a person be given a forum to recapitulate many of these beliefs. Although the Columbia student body was out in full force and along with the University president who called President Ahmadinejad ..”a petty and cruel dictator.” during the question and answer period of the Iranian leader’s presentation, what was the purpose of allowing him to give a presentation? Was this in someway to draw unwarranted attention to an already great University?

The line, and dare I say the party line was, the right to free speech. There is of course the argument that free speech is absolute, otherwise we begin a slippery slope into apparently….anarchy. However, is this really the case? I agree that there are arguments to be made against censorship many of which are valid and can in fact lead down a path that will result in restrictions. But these should be taken on a case by case basis along with a little common sense. The truth of the matter is, as much as we would like to believe we are in a free society, we are not in a free society where we can say and do what we want. Ask Michael Richards, Mel Gibson, or Don Imus. However, even though these individuals have in effect been disappeared from, at least the entertainment landscape for using words that are offensive these people never said they would kill anybody. I hope you can detect the sarcasm in reading that last line. I am in no way trying to defend these entertainers, but, we cannot condemn some and condone others and claim free speech when we want to. To allow an individual like Ahmadinejad to spew out hatred regardless of the “spirited dialogue” that may ensue afterwards in no way excuses giving him a public forum. Yet we are the ones picking and choosing who gets censored and who doesn’t.

The point is weighing a president’s views which clearly carries important political and global consequences and whose views contain the destruction of a people, should be examined a little more carefully before they are given a public voice.

Now I can’t begin to say I am a true opera fan, however, I can’t help but respect it as a musical art form, and now with the unfortunate passing of the Italian opera star Luciano Pavarotti at age 71 a few words seem appropriate.

Sympathy has poured out for the loss of this opera star who is probably well known to the lay person and not true opera fans for his work as part of the three tenors Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavoratti and Jose Carreras (the other guy). One of there live concerts put out on CD is still the highest selling opera album of all time. Highlights to his career also include hitting nine high Cs in a row during a 1972 performance of “Daughter of the Regiment” at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, financing and establishing the Pavarotti Music Center in the Bosnian city of Mostar, raising money to ban land mines worldwide with the late princess Diana, and rumor has it he holds the world record for the longest standing ovation.

Born on Oct. 12, 1935, Pavarotti started his singing career in 1963 and gave his last public performance at the 2006 winter Olympics in Turin, Luciano Pavarotti succumbed to pancreatic cancer after having surgery to remove a tumor in 2006. Pancreatic cancer has a very poor prognosis (a four percent survival rate after 5 years) and Pavarotti died shortly afterward. He is expected to be buried in his hometown Modena, Italy.

Clearly his voice will be missed in the world of Opera.

“I think a life in music is a life beautifully spent and this is what I have devoted my life to”
-Luciano Pavarotti

Firefighters have been struggling to contain fires that threaten to engulf ancient Greek Ruins. As firefighters have battled back some of the wildfires new fires have broken out, particularly in the south side of the country, calls have gone out for help through television and radio due to the exhausted and stretched firefighter forces. Firefighters suspect arson as the likely cause for the blazes and several individuals have already been arrested. The fires have stretched to the ancient village of Olympia (birthplace of the Olympic games) where the statue of victory threatens to be destroyed and the ancient stadium. 58 people have died so far in the fires and residents are beginning to lose patients and are angry at authorities for not being able to contain the fires. “I am very angry. The government was totally unable to deal with this situation,” said Gerassimos Kaproulias a schoolteacher. Helicopters and aircraft have now been activated to drop water and foam in an attempt to stop the spread of the fires and volunteers are now helping firefighters.

An amateur scientist has released a new video that apparently captures images of the legendary Loch Ness monster in clear view. Well, it is kind of a clear view. You know those mythical creatures have not remained elusive by smiling for photographs. Lab technician Gordon Holmes is the new hero for those believing that Nellie actually exists deep in the water of lake Loch Ness in Scotland. The new video (see it at the end of this article) shows a shadow moving underwater and near the lake’s surface. The dark object moving quickly looks large and eel-like which would sorta fit the common descriptions of Nellie. Considering the thousands of sightings of this serpent in the region, I am not surprised that everyone immediately identified it as the mysterious Nellie. Whether this is truly the elusive serpent finally revealing itself to us or just another hoax coincidentally occurring around tourist season, none really knows. Draw your own conclusions by watching the video below.

The cold war when the notion of any collaboration between Russia and North America was thought as heresy is long over. In the name of economics and the new world order, Russia is proposing that a tunnel connecting Russia with Alaska be constructed for the purpose of making it easier to transport commodities between the two continents. The tunnel which if constructed would be the world’s longest will be dug under the Bering Strait connecting Siberia and Alaska. The planned undersea tunnel would contain a high-speed railway, highway and pipelines, as well as power and fiber-optic cables, according to TKM-World Link.

The length of the underwater tunnel will be 65 miles or almost twice as long as the Channel Tunnel connecting the U.K. and France. The cost for the project is estimated at $10-$12 billion.

Russian Czar Alexander II sold Alaska to the United States in 1867 for $7,2 million. The formal transfer occurred on October 18, 1867 which is celebrated as Alaska Day yearly.

The new route will be used for the transportation of goods using a railway as well as energy including oil and natural gas. In addition, Russia intends to supply North America electricity generated in the currently planned Tugurskaya and Pendzhinskaya tidal plants, each with capacity of as much as 10 gigawatts, in the Okhotsk Sea, close to Sakhalin Island.

Today marks the 46-th anniversary since Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space and also the first man to complete an orbit around the Earth ushering a new space age for mankind. It was April 12, 1961, at the age of 27, when Gagarin was buckled in the small Vostok capsule designed by Sergei Korolyov setting out to write history and become one of Russia’s most admirable and charming heroes. Yuri’s seminal flight occurred 4 years after the launch of Sputnik 1, the first manmade object (artificial satellite) to be place in geocentric orbit.

For many years, the Russian people have celebrated Cosmonauts Day but in recent years there has been global parties organized to honor this space pioneer. Today, 119 parties will take place worldwide (in 32 countries) in what is called Yuri’s Night. Yuri Gagarin was met with an untimely death only a few years after his space flight. The cosmonaut was killed in a plane crash during a training mission on March 27, 1968.

Almost 5 decades later, we are entering a new era in space travel. Wealthy individuals can purchase trips to the International Space Station; the most recent example is billionaire Charles Simonyi who is currently a passenger on the orbiting laboratory. At the same time, space travel is no longer a government endeavor. The private sector has made huge progress in terms of making space travel affordable to more people creating a new class of passengers aptly referred to as space tourists. The Ansari X Prize competition was pivotal in this matter.
