I think that returning Christmas gifts is as much a tradition as buying them in the first place. Holiday gifts are no longer just a gesture of good will. People have very specific (and often very expensive) demands for what they expect to receive in their stocking on December 25th.

Many people go out of their way to find the perfect gift. In my experience, it is next to impossible to find the perfect gift for anyone. Even asking people doesn’t work. Most people don’t really know what they want. Everyone changes their mind every five minutes; we have television to thank for our generation’s short attention span.

I am getting really tired of buying Christmas gifts for people. Here is the case that broke the camel’s back for me. A friend of mine travels several times every year for business and personal reasons. So, what better gift for her than some nice Rimowa luggage? Well, she seemed to like it at first. Unfortunately, it didn’t last. She returned the luggage earlier today; apparently, she is already fully equipped for traveling so she had no use for it. What she will do with the money, I did not ask. At any rate, next year, I am giving everyone Amazon gift certificates so they can buy whatever the heck they want. I’m done with holiday gift buying.

For those who would love to enjoy cheap vacations, two of the most important aspects of any trip is being able to secure cheap airfare and cheap hotel reservations. Both can readily be searched out and the best deals found by taking the time to do comparison shopping online. While it might take you a few hours to uncover the best discounts, you could end up saving hundreds of dollars.

In addition to completing your necessary homework by doing the research for the different deals on airfare, hotel accommodations as well as car rentals that you are able to get, your timing of your trip as well as how flexible you are can have a large effect on the final cost. When it comes down to traveling, there are certain factors you have a great deal of control over, and others you don't. Some of the elements that you have a degree of control over, and hence some impact on the cost you will pay for are; the time of day that you travel, which day of the week you travel, the actual days that you will be in your hotel or using your car rental, as well s the time you book your travel.

One of the most important considerations in booking air tickets and hotel reservations is knowing when you should do the booking. Determining the best time to book the flight and make those reservations is a little akin to gambling because air fares and hotel rates are constantly changing.

You will find that there are numerous experts in the travel industry as well as different travel agencies who advise booking your air flight tickets as well as your hotel as soon as you possibly can. For those people who book early, they wil frequently be compensated with improved pricing measures as well as significant discounts. When a person is prudent he or she will book early so that they can sit back and relax, with the peace of mind knowing that their arrangements for vacations have been made, with their itinerary right in hand. You can just concentrate your time and energy on packing, getting rid of a few added poounds prior to your trip or saving up some aded money so you can spoil yoursef while you are away.

Nevertheless, practically everybody who has completed a little bit of travel will let you know that it they had postponed and booked their flight or set up arrangements for their particular hotel room at the last minute, they very well may have saved a great deal of cash. In some instances, a call to the airline or the hotel will result in a discount being granted, even if you have already paid a deposit or paid in full in advance. Yet, most of the time, the peace of mind realizing that you plans for your vacation have been set up for month in advance wil furnish you with the security you need most.

Then again you will find numerous tales of travelers who decide to postpone booking of a room at their preferred hotel. Unfortunately, to their chagrin, they discovered that not a room was to be found. All possible low cost hotel to luxury hotel room was booked solid for purposes of a convention and they were completely out of luck. That's where the gambling aspect of last minute reservations comes into play.

The good news is that if you can be flexible with your destination, then the solution can be as simple as choosing a different city to visit and securing flight and hotel reservations. But, not everyone can be that flexible and if you have to be in a certain city for a once-in-a-lifetime event, then it’s best to take the best deal you can find early and enjoy the knowledge that your travel plans are all set.

It can be so frustrating trying to deal with the airlines via the phone or even the computer. Their websites are complicated and not very user friendly. It makes searching for airplane fares a tedious and hair pulling experience. You do not have to put up with this anymore. You will not have to spend an hour on the phone being transferred from one department to another. You can find your airplane tickets online and often pay a fraction of the cost the airlines would charge you. That means more money in your pocketbook. Are you ready to save money and frustration?

We almost always associate las vegas nevada with a destination for the rich. In fairness, this is not a complete misconception considering that Las Vegas is mostly known for its casinos. The truth is that there is more to do in Las Vegas than spend all your money at one of the many casinos. Sure, you want to have some fun at the casino but you don’t have to be there 24/7 just because this is what you have been conditioned to believe.

The city offers a number of attractions for the whole family including GameWorks and Adventuredome. Your kids will get a kick out of the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay, the Secret Garden and Dolphin Habitat at the Mirage and, of course, the MGM Lion Habitat.

Needless to say, there are also a large number of affordable hotels; if you take the time to properly plan your Vegas vacation then you can get some great deals for the whole family. Some great deals for well known destinations such as the Riviera hotel and casino and also the Sahara hotel and casino are almost always available if you do your homework.

So, affordable vacations in Las Vegas are possible for a single person looking for a good time or for an entire family looking for a great time.

I just wrote earlier about my frequent travels some of which are for business and other for personal reasons. Speaking of the latter, I have accumulated a considerable amount of vacation time and I am thinking of taking some time off in the next couple of months. The question is where to actually go without breaking the bank.

I get an unbelievable amount of emails with offers for Vegas vacations but I really don’t feel like flying overseas this time around. I live in Australia now and since I have not seen much of this part of the world I figured I should spend a few days exploring this vast continent. That said, I think about spending a few days in Tasmania. There are lots of outdoors activities that I can enjoy there. I can go early summer and enjoy one of its many beaches or maybe a bit earlier and spend some time kayaking or hiking. There are definitely many options and I’m going to have to take some time to properly plan it. Tasmania, here I come!

I happen to be employed in a profession that gives me the privilege to travel at least a couple of times every year. Add to that the fact that I travel at least twice for personal reasons and I am entered in the frequent traveler category by default. There are many things I have learned from traveling so much but the one thing I want to share with you today is the importance of having the right luggage for your travels.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of purchasing durable luggage if you are a frequent traveler. If you go for the cheap stuff, chances are that your luggage will fall apart in the middle of your travel and all your personal possessions will end up everywhere but in your hotel room. Moreover, if you travel for business, it doesn’t hurt to have the proper luggage for all your files and computing equipment you are probably going to have to carry with you. Johnston and Murphy have a nice collection of leather travel accessories that are both durable and stylish. Who said that you have to sacrifice style for functionality? You can have both if you are willing to spend a bit more on your travel accessories. And if you are a frequent traveler like myself, then you should not be afraid to buy what you need.

I was told this many times before from friends who entered the workforce after finishing school and I honestly didn’t believe it. Until now! When you are in school, you have lots of freedom to spend your days as you wish. Sure, you have some constraints because you have to go to class, study and write exams but the whole world will not fall apart if you skip classes for a day or two because you wanted to go on a ski trip with your friends.

Once you start working full time, it all changes. Now, you have to be at work every day and you can only escape for those 2 weeks (if you are lucky) every year. And considering that these few days of vacation time are so important to you, deciding where to go is also a huge deal. It take a lot of planning both to find a place you want to visit and also to find a good deal so that you don’t overspend yourself (all of a sudden money has a lot more value because you have to work harder for them.) So, on a weekly basis, I find myself checking for any good vacation offers, cheap airline tickets, hotel specials, and cruise deals.

I never realized it was going to be like this but it is. And whether you believe me or not, it will happen to you.

It is true. Sydney bus drivers are crazy. However, let me elaborate on the kind of crazy they are. The basic idea here is that most, if not all, of them probably believe that they are actually F1 drivers. I don’t know if this is some kind of mass delusion among this particular group of people or if they are just bored with their jobs and try to make it a bit more exciting clearly on the expense of the passengers.

What does this mean for you and me who may require to take a bus daily or just every now and then?

First of all, if you have requested that the bus stops to let you off at the next possible location, then don’t get up from your seat until the bus has come to a complete stop. If you do get up, then you will regret it. Why is this? Drivers seem to ignore the fact that they are driving a massive vehicle with a lot of inertia and that the passengers are not strapped on the seats securely with a seatbelt on. A bus driver will gladly continue to drive at full speed until he/she gets to within a couple of meters of the bus stop and then slam on the brakes. If you happen to be standing, you will go flying. I think Sydney commuters have figured this out long ago so nobody stands up until the bus has come to a complete stop. In North America it is usual for passengers to make their way towards the rear door a block before the bus stop is reached to make it easier and faster to exit the vehicle. Don’t try this in Sydney.

Once a bus has stopped and allowed passengers off and on, it is time to start moving again. If you are one of the people getting on, hold on because you are in for a surprise. Sydney bus drivers essentially ignore the well being of their passengers just as much when accelerating as decelerating. Drivers will simply step on the gas pedal with all their might rocketing the bus forward at speeds known previously only to NASCAR drivers. If you are not holding onto something solid expect to be thrown backwards thanks to a beautiful (but annoying) thing called inertia. I think the reason why bus drivers do this is not so much because they want to hurt passengers (obviously) but because of the other car drivers on the road. Basically, few drivers will give the right of way to a bus. As a result, the bus drivers have to muscle their way into traffic which often means that given the opportunity to merge, they have to do so swiftly or else they will be stuck at the bus stop for the rest of the day.

At any rate and whatever the reasons, if you are visiting or just moving to Sydney be advised that bus drivers can be rather crazy in their driving habits. Once you get used to their driving behavior, riding a Sydney bus can be fun.

My job requires that I fly around the world a couple of times every year. Some times the flight is just to a nearby city and the time I spent at the airport is longer than the time I spend in the plane flying. Other times, I have to fly as far away as Australia and as such I may spent anywhere from 15 to 20 hours inside the plane. As you might have guessed, flying economy in the latter case is a very unpleasant experience. Certainly, the business class is a far more desirable way for flying across the world but good luck convincing your employer that it is a justifiable cost.

That said, have you ever wondered how those better off actually fly? Those who make 150K plus are likely to be the people flying first class in the same plane that you are in economy. The truly wealthy such as Oprah, and Playboy legend Hugh Hefner either own their own private jet or utilize a jet charter service. The best way to fly if you don’t want to spend your fortune keeping a plane service when you only need it a few times a year is to hire a jet on a per need basis via a jet charter company. Because you don’t become wealthy by wasting your money.

In the last 10 years, I moved a total of 7 times either within the same city, same country, and even half way across the world. Now that I have impressed you with my extensive travel experience (I do feel like a world citizen to tell you the truth,) I want to give you the secret to the perfect move.

The first ingredient is always to have a good friend nearby who can help you. This is important but not the secret because at the end of the day, you can always pay a professional mover to help you. The trick it to make it easy to move your livelihood across town or across the globe. So how to do it?

You start by how you live. Minimize all you can. Don’t accumulate crap in your apartment. Other than wasting money on things that you will never (or at best rarely) use, you are also making it difficult on yourself (and friend) to move to another apartment. No matter how much you minimize, however, chances are that crap will accumulate (it is the unwritten Murphy’s Law.) So, how do you manage the perfect move?

It is simple! Just get organized. Go out and purchase a few moving boxes. You can find these just about anywhere. The boxes are strong and will allow you to move all your processions in an organized and hassle free manner. Yes, the moving boxes tend to be a bit expensive but you should ask your friends if they have any (everybody has to move sooner or later) that you can borrow or buy from them at a much lower price.

And there you have it. The secret to the perfect move whether it is across town or across the globe is to get yourself some moving boxes.

So, I finally made my way to Sydney for a brief stint working here. Sydney is a beautiful city and even though the weather at the moment is not the best, i.e., it has been raining for the last few days and more rain is expected throughout the week, this post is about my first impressions with renting an apartment in Sydney.

Like any other modern city, Sydney’s apartments are well designed. But like everything else here, renting a good apartment will cost you. If you want a place situated in the Sydney CBD and it is in a newer building with a nice kitchen (Blanco sinks, granite tops, new appliances, etc.) expect to pay anywhere between $1200 to $1400 per month. And that is for a small studio. You can get something much cheaper further away from the city but it is likely to be an older building in a rougher area (and people here can be pretty rough from what I gathered so far.)

So, if you plan to move to Sydney, then make sure that you can afford to live here. It can be very expensive.
