I am going to publicly admit something today. I do not own a portable mp3 music player. No, I don’t have an iPod or Zune or any other brand of digital music player. And yes, I go to the gym 5 times every week and spend lots of time on a stationary bicycle.

Now that the elephant is out of the room, let me tell you why I don’t have one. First of all, there are so many different mp3 players out there that it gets confusing to select one. There are your ipods, zunes, and a myriad of other lesser known brands that make selecting one to buy difficult. Most people go the sure way and pick up an iPhone but I don’t want to purchase a closed piece of hardware that makes me another slave of the all mighty Apple.

Second, I have an issue with the state of the music produced today and the insane amount of money it costs to purchase (and still not own.) I don’t listen to top 40, hip hop or pop or any music created to sell an image than a creative piece of work. As a result, most of the music produced today does not appeal to me. I don’t want to waste my hard earned money on something that I will not enjoy. Not to mention that this crappy music is expensive and it would cost me thousands of dollars to fill an iPod. I don’t have that kind of money to waste.

Finally, if you are wondering how I keep myself entertained when doing my cardio at the gym, then let me tell you how. I bring a book with me and I read. This way, I get to exercise both my body and brain at the same time.

Sony is a well known and trusted name in technology. They continue to keep their name at the top of the list with the Sony Vaio notebook computer. With its first model they led the other manufacturers in innovation and concept. My first notebook computer was, in fact, a refurbished Sony Vaio with a mere 128MB of RAM and a 10GB hard drive build around an AMD CPU the name of which I no longer remember.

Sony has always made computers that are suitable for use students as well as professionals. Coming equipped with the latest in CPU technology and lots of RAM and HD space, Sony’s computers have the features needed to complete the most technical of jobs as well as a simple word documents and even play the latest computer games. Most importantly, Sony style has always given their computers an edge over competing brands because of the nice designs that often rival those of Apple Computer.

Today the Sony Vaio notebook computer is considered to be a top of the line notebook computer thanks to years of experience and engineering. With all of the features the Sony Vaio notebook computer has to offer it is no wonder that it remains one of the top selling notebook computer brands in the entire world.

Being first in the world of notebook computer technology has always been Sony’s benchmark. The Sony Vaio notebook computer was the first to build into their notebook computer wireless networking. This feature was available without the necessity of an added networking card or external device. This has allowed Sony to continue to be ahead of the rest.

Since the days when Sony laptop computers were the first to include a CD ROM drive, Sony was the first to offer their notebook computers in a variety of color options. They also offered to emblazon your company’s logo on the top. Pink, green, blue, turquoise, you name it and it will be done. Computers are not just for geeks anymore. Many believe that Apple were the first to start selling a computer product that emphasized style over functionality but Sony was there first and none can deny this.

It is just another way that Sony makes the customer feel like they are just as much a part of the design process of their own notebook computer as the company building it is and it is something that customers have readily responded to.

Sony has also been developing external security features that include a tougher outer skin on the Sony Vaio notebook computer. Notebook computers used to be extremely sensitive machines and while they still are very sensitive Sony has taken some of the incidental bumps out of the notebook computer by encasing some of their notebook computers in hard carbon fiber casing.

It is important to know how and why you should install a web firewall with the onslaught of computer hackers, scammers, and viruses that are prevalent around the Internet. Defense from malicious data harming your computer is provided by a web firewall. With one, you can avoid dangerous attacks that can wipe out your data or steal personal information.

Since there are a wide variety of web firewalls available, including those from major corporations such as Microsoft, you first need to determine what kind of web firewall your PC requires. A web firewall is likely to be set up and ready to use if the computer came installed with the Microsoft XP or Vista operating system. Check that it is turned on and working properly. Purchase your own software if you do not have one of these newer operating systems. The XP version doesn’t get great reviews so you may still want to buy separate web firewall software if you have Microsoft XP.

There are many products available, including as the most popular – Norton, AVG, and McAfee and you can either visit a store that sells computer software or download a web firewall product through the Internet. Even from the leading companies, there are plenty of low cost versions available, with prices varying according to the sophistication of the software. Once in hand and prior to installing your web firewall, you need to take a few things into consideration. The program must not stop you using the functions that you need, such as file and printing sharing. The documentation provided allows the settings to be configured during installation or at a later date.

Web firewalls tend to stop you from going to certain parts of the Internet as well. It is important that you are familiar with how you connect because this can happen if you use a local area network or a router. When you have installed a web firewall in place, secured networks in particular are difficult to access. Installing a web firewall to a pc linked to a company network may require a specific settings configuration to allow you to connect to them and this can be provided by a company’s IT department.

If all else fails, consider upgrading your computer to use an operating system safer than any of Microsoft’s offerings. Traditionally, hackers have always attacked the Windows OS because it is very popular and often full of holes waiting to be exploited. Unix-based operating systems are much safer alternatives. If you can afford it, you should consider purchasing an Apple computer running the Mac OS X which is the most popular commercially available consumer operating system that is of the Unix type. If you don’t have the money to pay the Apple tax, then download a free copy of the many Linux distributions available online. The Linux distribution that is the most user-friendly is known as Ubuntu and it won’t disappoint you.

The economy is already in the gutter and many of us are being very careful spending our money. We do the best we can to maximize the value of each and every dollar that we earn. Finding the best deals when shopping is not the easiest thing but technology is here to help us.

The new generation of smart phones such as the iPhone can help us save money when shopping. There are a number of applications that given information about a product along with one’s location can tell which store has the best deal. Google’s Android smart phone sold by T-mobile has a barcode scanner that can do this for you easily. Many devices have barcode scanners but only Android’s ShopSavvy application can help you save money instantly.

The application works by allowing users to scan the barcode on a product’s box and then given knowledge of the phone’s location via GPS and a large product database accessible online gives suggestions about the store’s that are nearby and have the best deal on the product. Now, that is progress!

We all have to deal with spam every day that we go online. There is spam in our email, social news websites, social networking sites (such as MySpace and Facebook,) comment spam, video spam, and even spam in the search engines (how many times did you search for something on Google just so that you get a result that takes you to a site full of spam and computer viruses trying to take over your computer and steal your data and identity?)

The kinds of spam that we receive is changing all the time. We get spam about cheap viagra, replica watches, cheap software, inheritance money from some prince in Nigeria, pills to make our member larger than life, online poker and sports betting, i.e., gambling, pyramid schemes that promise us a free iPod, iPhone, PS3, etc. if we spam all our friends and family, and so on.

Over the years, software companies have been able to create software that detects a large percentage of spam such that we never see it unless we chose to. Regardless and depending on how active you are online, there is no program that can detect and eliminate all such malicious and annoying advertising with 100% accuracy.

It is unfortunate that the Internet which has made it possible for people from across the world to connect and share ideas has also been abused so much. A few bad apples are ruining this magnificent tool for the rest of us who want to use it as a communication and collaboration tool as it was meant to be from the beginning. Here is hoping.

To help people find their way around today’s technology has invented the gps system. This is alternatively called a Global Positioning Satellite system. The gps systems use the satellites which have been made to help with navigation, tracking and location coordinates. You are able to purchase various items which have included a gps system. You should be able to find some low cost gps devices as there is a big range nowadays.

This however means that you will need to see about the various features that are present in these devices. You should be able to observe the monitor interface cleary with a gps system. You're new low cost gps interface must be able to give you clear maps which are not hard to see. Also to modify from a section or feature of the map to another, the touch screen should be in very good operating condition.

The different gps systems will also have varying prices which are also dependent on the features which are embedded into the system. Low cost gps devices should be avaliable at a cost of $100 up to $400. You may want to rethink things in the event that you think the price range is on the expensive side.

The newer gps systems which have many new and improved features come in the price bracket of $999.99 and upwards. You can even find a not so cheap gps system available for the healthy price of – quick find a chair and have a fan near by - $2,000.00 USD. When comparing prices, paying $200 is a better option that paying an expensive cost of $2,000.00.

Once you have gotten past this shock point we can proceed. You will need to do some shopping and choose the cheap gps model which has all of the features that are necessary for a gps. These features should be low cost, a very good quality touch screen monitor, an easy to read and visible interface.

The street maps should also be clearly visible. The route you will take and your current position highlighted so that you can see them even in the darkness. The various street names, railway crossings, hospitals, and other venues of importance should be shown and stated well. The voice prompts which are part of the gps systems should be heard clearly even on a cheap gps.

Since technologu is supposed to assist us, it would be a good idea to choose stuff that provides such assistance. While getting the brand new products that are available can show your status and prestige you will need to pay a substantial price. A cheap gps on the other hand can give you all of the help you require for a fraction of the price.

There used to be a day when Internet Explorer ruled the online world. Of course, this is still a popular web browser, but it has lost a large portion of users to Firefox. When it comes down to it, there are many reasons that Firefox is the best browser on the market. While this is only a matter of opinion, there are many people who share this feeling.

For many, one of the biggest benefits of Firefox is its ability to successful block pop-ups. As an internet user, you are probably well aware of how annoying this can become. With Internet Explorer you need an additional program to block pop-ups; this is not the case with Firefox.

Additionally, Firefox makes it easy to open more than one tab on one window. In other words, you do not need a different window for each website that you want to view; you can simply use tabs. While Internet Explorer is moving in this direction, they have yet to master the tabs feature.

Finally, you do not have to be a computer expert to install Firefox. The setup is easy, and as long as you can follow on screen prompts, you will have the Firefox browser downloaded and ready to go in no time at all.

All in all, Firefox has a lot to offer. When you add top of the line security features to the benefits above, there is no wondering why Firefox is closing in on Internet Explorer as the most commonly used web browser.

We live in the age of mobility. Our mobile electronic devices are becoming smaller with more computational power that was used to fly and land the American astronauts on the Moon. We now have nice looking devices like the iPhone and we can, in theory, stay connected 24/7. And yet, I still can’t believe how poor cell phone coverage still is today even in major cities.

I don’t get annoyed by many things but technology is seriously starting to piss me off. First, we had to put up with the Microsoft Window Operating System which thought it fine to crash and burn every so often. Then, we had to put up with business software that could not represent dates past the year 1999 resulting in millions of dollars spent trying to correct it. Now, we have really bad cell phone coverage which we have to put up with for the privilege of staying connected with our loved ones and friends. I really wish the company I work for would install a cell signal booster in our coorporate building to provide better signal for us. The company can afford it and we can definitely increase our work efficiency if we had it.

In general, I get the impression that the faster technology advances, the less usable it becomes. It is about time that consumers voted with their wallets and started demanding better products and service from the tech industry.

Just my 2c.

Let me tell you what the most essential component of your vacation is. It is a memory cards for your digital camera. Why, do you ask? Because these days we all have a digital camera and we take photos nonstop. Because we don’t have to worry about paying more money to develop the film, we have a tendency to snap photos continuously.

This being the case, make sure to bring along a couple of memory cards for storing all these photos. Unless you bring a laptop computer with you, you are very likely to use up your camera’s internal memory space faster than the US economy flashed down the drain. You shouldn’t risk missing our on a great moment because your memory card has run out of space. But be careful to buy the right card for your camera because there as as many different kinds of memory cards in the market as there are different digital camera brands. If in doubt, go back to the store where you bought your camera (bring the camera with you if you really want to make sure.)

I was typing an essay for work earlier today on my trusty Dell Inspiron 700m laptop computer and I got to thinking about my first ever portable computer. I have had my Dell for about 3 years now and so far (knock on wood) has served me well and I hope it will continue to do so for many years to come. Before buying this machine, however, I relied heavily on my Sony Vaio laptop which I had purchased second half from a local computer store.

The Vaio was using an CPU made by AMD and it was definitely not one that would be advertised for its not so long lasting battery. Even though I bought that machine second hand (in fact it was factory refurbished) it went on working well for at least 3 years before it was just too slow and had too little memory (128MB of RAM) to run any of the more modern operating systems. Truthfully, the machine came with a copy of Windows ME which was as bad as advertised. I think that of all operating systems that Microsoft ever made this was by far the worst and to a certain degree they even admitted as much themselves. I through my copy of Windows ME out the window after the first couple of weeks and I installed a copy of Red Hat which is a freely available Linux distribution. It worked like a charm for years. I tried installing Windows XP at a later stage because I needed to use Power Point for some presentations and the Vaio handled it very well. It didn’t run super fast but it was good enough. Eventually, I had a need for a machine that could handle presentations with lots of multimedia content and so I replaced my Sony Vaio for the Inspiron 700m that I am using right now to type this article.

Will I go back to owning another Vaio in the future? It is possible. Some of Sony machines are very well designed and if I ever want a truly portable and stylish device I might considering buying a Vaio. I had a pleasant experience in the past with this brand and even though I have recently heard some bad news about the newer machines, I would definitely consider them again.
