When a person decides to study architecture, he or she must decide on a specialty. There are a number of areas in architecture to choose from. Now, we have to spend the better part of our days working in hopes that we will be given a tiny wage increase at the end of the year or maybe that ever elusive promotion. We work nonstop putting up with office politics dreaming for the 2 weeks of vacation that we are entitled too just so that we can (hopefully) enjoy some of those freedoms that we took for granted when growing up.

Seeing all that gray hair and wrinkles in the mirror reminds me of the ignorance of youth. Oh, how was that wasted in meaningless activities playing video games, watching TV, surfing the World Wide Web, or just seating around doing nothing all day. Bonsai trees can either be grown from seeds or from cuttings of trees, and they normally range in height from two inches to three feet.  They are kept miniture through pruning both branches and roots.  Additionally, new growth is often pinched off when they are periodically repotted. 

There is a much about art as there is about horticulture in the cultivating of bonsai trees.  Bonsai trees are not only kept small, they are also formed into pleasing shapes.  They often follow a number of different patterns of growth, from simple triangles to waterfall shapes cascading down over their pots.  The various shapes are usually a product of both the pruning of the tree and through the use of wrapping the trunk and branches with wire, pushing the tree into its desired shape.  Chosen to compliment the color and shape of the tree itself, the pots are also part of the art of bonsai.  Rocks and mosses are frequently added to the base for aesthetic appeal.

I was on my way to sailing class and as usual I had to take the train. I took my sailing hat with me and I was holding it in my hand. In the train, for some reason, I had to rest my hat on the seat next to me. When I finally reached my destination, I got up and exited the train but I forgot my hat on the seat. Bummer!

Worst of all, it was a very sunny day and I needed a hat in order to prevent the Sun from burning my skin. So, on the way to the marina, I stopped and purchased a replacement hat (a visor, actually) to the tune of $25.

Eventually, we got on the boat and we started our sailing lesson. We were at the half way mark of a 3-hour lesson when a gust of wind blew the hat off my head and into the water. Our instructor tried some nifty maneuvers to try and retrieve the hat from the water but it was too late. There goes my new visor less than 2 hours from purchase.

Yesterday was not the best day for hats I owned.

I have not idea what started the fight because I was looking in the opposite directions when it all started. There were two groups of people mixed male and female and at first only 2 were fighting which mostly involved yelling and pushing each other. Then, out of the blue, one of the girls picked up some pool balls and threw them at one of the guys fighting. All hell broke lose after that and everyone in the two groups got involved throwing punches, kicking, and pulling hair. A couple of the bar staff got involved and tried to break the fight but it just made things worse.

The event lasted about 10 minutes and it was not until the police came that everyone more or less calmed down. Lots of bruised people and bleeding noses could be seen among the two groups that turned the bar into a boxing ring. An ambulance came to offer first aid and then the police escorted the trouble makers out of the bar and my guess is to the local station.

Luckily, none of the people not in the two groups was hurt. More importantly, people did not have knives or guns and the whole event ended with just a few broken noses rather than dead bodies. The night went on for the rest of us but it was partly ruined because the fight was the only thing people talked about. Well, it was my first bar fight and even if I was not involved, it was interesting to experience. I hope I won’t have to experience it again.
