We are living some hard times at the moment. Since the debt crisis that hit the entire world hard last year, hundreds of thousands of jobs have been lost in the United States and every where else. People are losing their houses and their jobs at the same time. Those who had enough money save to survive this far but have lost their jobs in the last few months are desperate to find new jobs to feed their families. How can one find a job in such difficult economic times?

The truth is that there is no simple answer to the latter questions. It is clear that the manufacturing sector which has been in decline for the last couple of decades (at least) is not the place to go looking for a job. The financial sector that grew rapidly since the 80s has also collapsed after the more recent fiasco with the subprime mortgages. So, if you are thinking of going back to school to earn and MBA in hopes of getting a job in the financial sector, forget it. It is not going to happen.

Starting your own business is an alternative that some will definitely explore. Considering, however, that unemployment numbers are flirting with double digit numbers and lots of people are changing mentality towards saving money rather than spending uncontrollably, chances are that many new home businesses and mom and pop stores will also be failing ventures. In other words, if you start a new business now you will most likely end up with more debt than you have now.

So, what is really left?

Well, there is always the Information Technology sector. Sure, many companies are tightening their belts trying to minimize losses while this economic twister passes through, but at the same time many are thinking about how to grow their businesses for the years to come. IT is not going away since just about every industry today relies on computer technology to operate. To enter the IT sector if you have no prior experience consider taking some night classes at your local college. These are usually affordable and being at night allow you to take care of your children or work a part-time job if you have one. When it comes to IT jobs, it is always a good idea to keep your skills current so even if you have prior training it won’t hurt to take some more courses to familiarize yourself with some of the most current tech.

You can start you IT job search at any time by using one or more of the myriad of online resources. An job in the IT sector maybe one of your best chances for becoming employed in the current economic climate.

Thousands of people have been affected by the current economic downturn that has resulted from the subprime loan crisis of late 2008. World economies are in recession and many large and small corporations are cutting jobs in order to reduce losses or barely remain profitable in 2009. Chances are that the current economic conditions will persist until the end of this year and possibly well within 2010.

Goverments throughout the world are trying to improve the situation by printing money and encouraging banks to give out more loans. So far such a policy has not helped much as jobs are lost on a daily basis. All job sectors have been hit hard including financial institutions, information technology companies and automakers. As people have less and less money to spend while trying to save as much as possible many jobs in retail have and will continue to be lost over the next few months. Even the holiday period that often sees the highest sales was not enough to save jobs. Interestingly, the only retailer that measured a sizeable increase in sales and profits during this past holiday season was the online retailer Amazon.

The rest of the year is going to be very difficult for many families. Those who have lost their jobs are already feeling the pain as it has become impossible for them to pay back their debt many losing their houses; foreclosures throughout the USA and the rest of the world are at their highest. Those fortunate enough to still have a job, live every day in fear that their income may disappear the next day as their employer tries to cut back on expenses.

The current economic downturn is causing much hurt to all of use. Let’s hope things will pickup quickly and that the same people who made the mistakes the last few years will not repeat them again. Citizens of this world simply cannot take any more abuse by the greedy.

Are you interviewing for a job sometime in the near future? If so, you are probably all set with your resume, answers to common questions, and much more. But did you ever think about what you are going to wear on that job interview? Believe it or not, the way that you dress could go a long way in determining whether or not you land the position. This may sound a bit off base, but you have to remember that the hiring party is simply human. They are going to be drawn to the people who not only have the best answers and experience, but look good at the same time.

It is very important to put a lot of time into considering your interview attire. First and foremost, you should always wear a suit. Even if you are not interviewing for a job that will require a suit and tie, on the interview this is a must. If you skip this, you are more or less putting yourself at a disadvantage from the start. It does not take much more time or effort to put on a suit and tie. The worst thing that could happen would be that you are overdressed. And guess what? It is better to be overdressed than to look like a fool because everybody else is decked out to the nine’s.

Not only should you wear a suit and tie, but it should also be one that is in style. In other words, if you do not have a clean, modern suit, you need to buy one. You want to put on the best show, and a new suit will help you to do just that.

The way that you present yourself at your interview will have a lot to do with whether or not you land the job.

Funny thing happened at work today. One of our secretaries discovered that someone is stealing office supplies from us. Considering that our building is secure and only people with the proper access cards can get in, someone in our office is the one stealing. Who steals office supplies these days? Honestly, what is one going to do with some recycled printer paper and paper clips or post-it notes at home. I make a huge effort to forget about work when I finally live the office. I don’t want anything in my house that reminds me of work. Even worse, if they catch the person stealing the supplies, he/she will lose his/her job. In an economy that has been going down the tubes the last few months, who can afford to lose their job for something this silly?

Sometimes, the idiocy of some people astounds me!

The rise of the computer and the Internet has made it easy for many of us to share our daily adventures with friends and strangers. Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and Flickr make it easy for us to post information about our latest adventurous including photos and videos.

Guess what! You new employee may be taking advantage of online services that allow for employment screening. In other words, your new employee may find those photos you posted on MySpace that show you having a hell of a time in Ibiza half naked and fully drunk. Believe it or not, this could cost you a new job or a promotion in your current job. Many people have already been burned because of information about their private lives that they have posted online. Don’t make the same mistake and show prudence on what kind of material you post on the Internet. Better to keep some things to yourself than share them with strangers no matter how innocent might seem to you now.

If you hate your job then you might want to reconsider your stance. Why? Because there are jobs out there much worse than yours. In fact, Popular Science magazine has compiled a list of the 10 worst jobs in science and you will be surprised how much better your job is after going over the list.

Of the 10 jobs on the list, in my opinion, two stand out as the absolute worse not only in science but among all jobs. I am talking about the whale-feces researcher and hazmat diver. As you may have guessed, both jobs involve shit!

A whale-feces researcher spends her time traveling the oceans looking for whale feces to collect and study. Apparently, you can learn much from a whale’s feces including telling individuals apart or determining if a female is pregnant. You have to go to graduate school for many years to qualify for this job. I am sure it makes it all worth it!

A hazmat diver’s mission involves literally swimming in sewage. Hazmat divers are called in to clean environmental pollutants such as toxic spills, oil spills or clogged sewers. These guys face death everyday of their lives. Even though they wear some kick ass drysuits that prevent contact with the toxic material, a small tear anywhere can be deadly. I sure hope they get paid well for doing this job.

Other jobs in the list include forensic entomologist, Olympic drug tester, Microsoft security expert, coursework carcass preparer, garbologist, elephant vasectomist and oceanographer.

You can get descriptions for each of these jobs at the Popular Science magazine website here.

If you are now entering the workforce for the first time in your life or you are a veteran looking to change jobs, you must know that getting the job that caught your eye in the classifieds is a two step process. First you must prepare a great resume and cover letter which will get you called in for an interview. Second, you have to ace the interview and get them to offer you the job on your own terms. There is hardly any point in preparing yourself for the interview if your resume and cover letter are so terribly written that you never make it thus far.

The editors at emurse.com provide a service that allows you to create, share and store your resume online for free. Recently, they also published an excellent article full of tips about creating a great resume that will get you one step closer to your dream job. Writing a good resume is not an easy task and the article makes some very good points; for example, the article suggests that you should tailor your resume for each job that you are applying for because no two jobs are the same.

According to Statistics Canada, the Canadian economy is booming generating far more jobs than experts expected. In fact, during the month of January, a grand total of 88,900 jobs were created beating economists expectations of 10,000 to 15,000 jobs.

Apparently, most of these new jobs were created in the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. This should be no surprise since Alberta’s economy is booming due to its vast oil supply in the Oil Sands project. Similarly, British Columbia is growing at a frantic pace with construction taking place everywhere and especially in the city of Vancouver. Vancouver and Whistler are preparing to host the 2010 Winter Olympics so there is much construction work in housing and transportation, i.e., highway expansion and a new train connecting the downtown to the Vancouver international airport. No wonder the unemployment rate in BC dropped by a whole percentage point to only 4.3%.
