Science Olympiad is a team competition based around the topics of science and engineering. Each year, approximately 15,000 teams from the United States and Canada compete in this event.

There are four divisions that make up the Science Olympiad. They include: Division A1 for teams in grades kindergarten through three, Division A2 for teams in grades three through six, Division B for teams in grades six through nine, and Division C for grades nine through 12. Despite the fact that there are several divisions, it is still a difficult feat for any team to take home first place. Only the best of the best are crowned winners at the end of the event.

The first National Science Olympiad took place in 1985. Prior to this, the event was known simply as the Delaware Science Olympiad after the only state in which it took place. At this time, more than 45 states as well as some parts of Canada take part in the annual Science Olympiad.

There are three main categories in which teams compete. They include: Science Application and Technology, Science Processes and Thinking Skills, and Science Concepts and Knowledge. Within these categories, there are 23 events that take place.

Each May, the National Science Olympiad is held at a different host university. To make things fair, the event is held in a different state each year.

All in all, the Science Olympiad has been going strong for many years. It is a great event for students in all grade levels, as well as their coaches!
