Sony Vaio: My first laptop computer

I was typing an essay for work earlier today on my trusty Dell Inspiron 700m laptop computer and I got to thinking about my first ever portable computer. I have had my Dell for about 3 years now and so far (knock on wood) has served me well and I hope it will continue to do so for many years to come. Before buying this machine, however, I relied heavily on my Sony Vaio laptop which I had purchased second half from a local computer store.
The Vaio was using an CPU made by AMD and it was definitely not one that would be advertised for its not so long lasting battery. Even though I bought that machine second hand (in fact it was factory refurbished) it went on working well for at least 3 years before it was just too slow and had too little memory (128MB of RAM) to run any of the more modern operating systems. Truthfully, the machine came with a copy of Windows ME which was as bad as advertised. I think that of all operating systems that Microsoft ever made this was by far the worst and to a certain degree they even admitted as much themselves. I through my copy of Windows ME out the window after the first couple of weeks and I installed a copy of Red Hat which is a freely available Linux distribution. It worked like a charm for years. I tried installing Windows XP at a later stage because I needed to use Power Point for some presentations and the Vaio handled it very well. It didn’t run super fast but it was good enough. Eventually, I had a need for a machine that could handle presentations with lots of multimedia content and so I replaced my Sony Vaio for the Inspiron 700m that I am using right now to type this article.
Will I go back to owning another Vaio in the future? It is possible. Some of Sony machines are very well designed and if I ever want a truly portable and stylish device I might considering buying a Vaio. I had a pleasant experience in the past with this brand and even though I have recently heard some bad news about the newer machines, I would definitely consider them again.
