The costs of having a baby

Becoming a parent is probably one of the most significant events in a person’s life. This much can be verified by just about anyone who has reached this milestone in their life. However, it also doesn’t take much to realize that having a baby is also a very costly affair these days.
There are many reasons why having a baby is so expensive. First of all, in a two income family, one of the parent will not be able to work for a certain period of time. In some cases where money is not enough to hire a nanny, this could mean the end of employment for one of the two parent in the family. This can have a huge impact in a family’s finances with costs sharply increasing just before and after the newborns arrival.
Costs will increase both because of the loss of one income but also because of the additional expenditure necessary to support the mother and baby. For example, maternity clothes along with baby clothes and food must be purchased. Medical costs also increase exponential to care for the new mother and baby. These are mostly immediate expenses and could be budgeted for. However, there are long term expenses such as saving money for the kid’s college education 18 years later that must also be planned for. Vacations and visits to family if they live in a different city or abroad also increase having to pay for an additional person.
These are only few of the increased expenses that new parents face. I don’t want to discourage people from having babies. All I am trying to say here is that it takes lots of careful planning before making the big decision to bring a baby into this world. Because what good is it to give life to someone if you cannot guarantee a bright and happy future for him/her.
