Blu-ray ahead of HD-DVD in format war

Wal-Mart may have put the last nail on HD DVD’s coffin after announcing today that they will stop carrying HD DVD discs and players in their Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores in the US and Canada. The latest announcement follows similar decisions by Best Buy and Netflix. All of these retailers have said that they will only be selling Blu-ray discs and players practically putting an end to the format war. Most consumers including myself have avoided making a purchase until one of the two formats took a considerable lead in the market. It would appear that Blu-ray will soon become the format of choice and it will not be long before Toshiba pulls the plug on HD DVD.

And maybe now prices for Blu-ray players will drop a little. The low demand as consumers waited to see how the format war will play out has kept prices high for both camps. Actually, the cheapest (and according to many independent reviews, one of the best) Blu-ray players is the one that Sony sells for their PS3 game console. One more reason to prefer the PS3 over Microsoft’s XBox 360 that supported the HD DVD format.
