Apple just introduced the thinnest laptop known to man. The new super-thin portable computer is called MacBook Air and it is a 3-pound laptop with a dual-core Intel CPU and 13.3-inch screen. This computer is specifically designed to be portable so its CPU is not the fastest money can buy and it does not have an optical drive. Apple expects owners to install software and download files to their new computer using the build in wireless networking. That said, Apple wants hardware owners to get all their digital content from iTunes so it makes sense for them to remove the optical drive and force people to pay for all digital content. Also, removing the drive helps make this the thinnest laptop available today and at the same time it gives it much longer battery life (especially when paired with the solid state hard drive) of up to 5 hours.
The only two problems with Apple’s MacBook Air are the price and the fact that the battery is not user replaceable. The starting price for a MacBook Air is $1800 but it can easily be almost double that if one buys it with the solid state drive and faster CPU. In terms of the battery, it is disappointing that users cannot replace them on their own and will have to send the machine to Apple to have it replaced when necessary; and unless this is some kind of miracle battery, at some point, all MacBook Air laptops will have to go back to Apple to get a new battery either because it run its life or because it broke.
The following video explains some of the most interesting features of the MacBook Air.
PS: I know it is rather expensive but for those of us who like a mobile machine, Apple’s offering is definitely a very attractive one.
