CBC’s Doc Zone recently aired a documentary titled “The Pagan Christ.” The documentary examines the possibility that Jesus Christ is a fictional character borrowed by the early Christians from Egyptian mythology.
So, what if it could be proven that Jesus never existed? What if there was evidence that every word of the New Testament – the cornerstone of Christianity – is based on myth and metaphor?
Based on Tom Harpur’s national bestseller, The Pagan Christ examines these very questions. During his research, Harpur discovered that the New Testament is wholly based on Egyptian mythology, that Jesus Christ never lived, and that – indeed – the text was always meant to be read allegorically. It was the founders of the Church who duped the world into taking a literal approach to the scriptures. And, according to Harpur, this was their fatal error – and the very reason Christianity is struggling today.
This is a very interesting documentary that is probably not likely to ever air south of the Canadian border. But the entire documentary is available for free online on YouTube. So anyone can watch it and draw his/her own conclusions. Honestly, the religious people trying to refute Harpur’s theory provide no evidence whatsoever to support their position; they simply claim that his evidence are weak and stop there. This is the typical way that these people defend their religion. I am always surprised that there exist people who still go to church after so many year of being lied to and manipulated.
