The true meaning of Christmas

By Alpha • Dec 15th, 2007 • Category: Atheism

Now, I am an atheist and as far as I am concerned Christmas is a great opportunity to take some time off and enjoy life at its fullest without having to seat in front of a computer for 8 hours every day. However, for religious people, Christmas is often thought to have some deep spiritual meaning since it is meant to be the day that their savior was born. Leaving in the very multicultural North America, there are people of many different religious beliefs who don’t believe in Jesus and are often offended when people refer to this period as Christmas. The politically correct way to refer to this period of time every year is now accepted to be the Holiday period signifying that there are more celebrations happening other than the Christian one.

Unfortunately, this holiday period is not really about any religious beliefs regardless of what religion one prefers. It is about something else. Something that some people have already realized while others are completely ignorant. The cartoon below from Daryl Cagle’s Professional Cartoon Index nicely illustrates what the holiday period is all about. Look surprised!
