How Much Do you Love your pet?

A few years ago, a radio station posed the question for which the answer was thought to be very obvious, however, this was not to be the case. Of course everyone has an opinion and their reasons for giving such answers, but it may reflect a disturbing situation in our society, okay so you are probably wondering what the question was and why the impact of such a thing could reflect the title of this piece.
The question was posed…If you were near a river and saw your dog drowning and next to your dog was a complete stranger who was also drowning who would you save? To me the answer seemed obvious, even if the situation was not entirely plausible. I would save the stranger. However, the majority of callers were saying they would save their dog. Stating this was a complete stranger and he could be a serial killer, I know and love my dog so that’s who I would save. Others, frankly decided to avoid the question all together stating, the situation was not plausible for various reasons, dogs are good swimmers, why would you not know where your dog was?, How would you save them or why couldn’t you save both?
Regardless of the details, it is somewhat disturbing that we have come to the point where we have put a dog’s life before a human life, that we have become so mistrustful (with good reason or not) that we have come to a stage that the first thing we think of is if this person is a good person, in other words are they worthy of being saved. Admittedly, I am not a dog owner or pet owner for that matter, and one argument that came was the fact that, if you are not dog owner you don’t understand the relationship one has with one’s pet. This to me is not enough to support an idea of disregarding the safety of a human being over a dog.
So with all that said the question is posed who would you save?
