Brain-Eating Amoeba
By Bigsky • Oct 1st, 2007 • Category: HealthA rare Amoeba that causes a form of encephalitis that is apparently 95% fatal has recently popped up again, 6 deaths have already occurred in the US this year. The symptoms are similar to meningitis such as fever, stiff neck and headache. Children seem to be most susceptible to the disease. The amoeba flourishes in muddy water with warm temperatures. Dr. Anthony Fuci at the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious diseases adds however.. “the disease is very rare with only 200 cases every reported in the world since its discovery or when it was recognized in 1965.”
However, 23 cases have been reported in the US since 1995 to the present. Again Dr. Fuci adds, …”the disease is very rare 1 in 2.6 million exposures, people should just be concerned about swimming in unclean fresh water.”
