Prostitution with Government Regulation

Once again, government has shown that everything can be legal as long as it is profitable. In Budapest, Hungary where prostitution is a billion dollar industry annually and illegal, the government will now allow prostitutes to apply for an entrepeneur’s permit, from which the government can make a profit. The permit allows sex workers to give receipts to customers and to pay taxes. Agnes Foldi, head of the Hungarian Prostitutes Interest Protection Association acknowledges that prostitution is a “….shadow economy and this legislation will help a group of professionals.”

I see this move being similar to the continued legalization of cigarettes, as long as it can generate government revenue than it is acceptable. Granted prostitution is legal in certain countries and the Hungarian government claims this is an effort to get prostitutes into the economy, but what should be an obvious concern is the sexual slavery that occurs in such countries. Women are forced to become prostitutes and in a lot of cases children as well, yet instead of attempting to fix that problem the government seems more concerned about how to make a profit.
