TechCrunch reports that Yahoo! Mail is finally our of beta testing and now offers, among other things, unlimited storage; this feature is available for free to all Yahoo! Mail users. The application can do more than just handle your email. It also offers an integrated RSS reader and SMS/text messaging which only works for U.S., India, Philippines and Canadian mobile numbers.
I have been a user of Yahoo! Mail as well as Google Gmail and a long time ago Microsoft Hotmail. I no longer use the latter so I won’t say anything else about it. Google’s email offering is much different than any other application of this niche that I have ever used; some people like it and some people don’t. I find it interesting in some ways but I still wish they would allow me to organize my email in folders; the search function of Gmail sure rocks though.
Anyways, Yahoo’s offering mimics a desktop email client. So those of you familiar with such applications will feel right at home on Yahoo! Mail. The only problem I have with it is that the interface tends to be very slow, at least when used with Firefox which is the web browser of choice for me. Some people are also reporting that Yahoo! Mail does not support the popular Safari browser. Finally, Yahoo! charges $20 per year for POP access when others such as Gmail provide this service at no cost to the user. If you don’t like paying Yahoo! For POP access then better stay away from them because they are not likely to be giving it away for free any time soon; rumor has it that they have many paying customers and they are not stupid enough to turn their backs to such a great revenue stream.
