Immigration heats up in the U.S.

A failed legislation act in June of this year that in effect prevented illegal immigrants from remaining in the U.S. and eventually gaining citizenship, has resulted in an even greater urgency on the side of government to get something done. With no concrete solution in place from government, both the American people and illegal immigrants are taking matters into there own hands.

Due to the attention this issue has garnered in recent months, immigration authorities have increased raids on workplaces and with fines on employers who hire illegal immigrants. In addition, anti-illegal immigration groups have also tried to use federal law (under the Freedom of Information Act) to obtain the names and addresses of businesses that employ illegal immigrants.

On the other side of the issue are people like Elvira Arellano, an illegal immigrant with an 8-year old son born in the U.S. who took refuge in Adalberto United Methodist Church in Chicago under the arcane law of protection of sanctuary to avoid deportation. Elviro and her son represent some 2 million illegal immigrant families with double the number of U.S. born children. Regardless of what rhetoric you believe, illegal immigrants pose a threat to the U.S. or are taking jobs away from U.S. citizens, that they provide U.S. dollars into a tax system (at least those that work as day laborers) that they do not collect and therefore help the economy, do the jobs that U.S. citizens would not do. The point is, legislation has to be nailed down and followed to avoid what could become an escalation to a hostile situation.
