If you are in your late 30s or more then you will feel right at home when you see this video of Alan Watts’s narrative on the relationship between music and life. Music and life are not about the ending. Both are about the journey and not where you end up. Think about it for a moment. You work your ass off day in and day out to what end? You are probably after one of many things that could be a pay increase, a promotion, an advanced graduate degree, a nicer car, a bigger house etc. And maybe one day when you are old and you have worked hard enough, you actually get to this high endpoint.
So what? Are you going to be happy? What about all those years of your life that you sacrificed to get this far? Was it really worth it? What about those poor people who work all their lives and never get to achieve their goals for whatever reason?
Okay, those were many questions for which I don’t really have an answer. I think that every man should consider all of them for himself and decide where he places more value; long term, one time success or a long enjoyable life?
Watch this beautifully animated recording of Alan Watts describing the error in our current philosophy of life emphasizing the end over the journey.
