The Daily Green writes about a recent report revealing the truth about the inadequacy of corn-based ethanol to supply an energy hungry country.
According to the report, even if all corn fields in the U.S. were converted to growing corn for ethanol production, it will only be sufficient to cover 15% of the country’s energy needs. In addition, it is expected that a switch to corn-based ethanol fuel will only increase environmental pollution.
Although the report is damning of bio-fuels, the truth is that it is entirely a case against corn-based ethanol production and not against ethanol as an alternative energy source. It is possible to produce ethanol from other sources including sugar cane which I believe is the source main source of ethanol in Brazil; of course, Brazil has the advantage that its climate favors the growth of sugar cane crop easing the country’s transition into an very profitable and sustainable ethanol economy.
