If you hate your job then you might want to reconsider your stance. Why? Because there are jobs out there much worse than yours. In fact, Popular Science magazine has compiled a list of the 10 worst jobs in science and you will be surprised how much better your job is after going over the list.
Of the 10 jobs on the list, in my opinion, two stand out as the absolute worse not only in science but among all jobs. I am talking about the whale-feces researcher and hazmat diver. As you may have guessed, both jobs involve shit!
A whale-feces researcher spends her time traveling the oceans looking for whale feces to collect and study. Apparently, you can learn much from a whale’s feces including telling individuals apart or determining if a female is pregnant. You have to go to graduate school for many years to qualify for this job. I am sure it makes it all worth it!
A hazmat diver’s mission involves literally swimming in sewage. Hazmat divers are called in to clean environmental pollutants such as toxic spills, oil spills or clogged sewers. These guys face death everyday of their lives. Even though they wear some kick ass drysuits that prevent contact with the toxic material, a small tear anywhere can be deadly. I sure hope they get paid well for doing this job.
Other jobs in the list include forensic entomologist, Olympic drug tester, Microsoft security expert, coursework carcass preparer, garbologist, elephant vasectomist and oceanographer.
You can get descriptions for each of these jobs at the Popular Science magazine website here.
