The natural low fat cow

New Zealand scientists hit the jackpot with a mutant cow that produces low-fat milk naturally. Yes, you heard that right! The cow which apparently suffered a natural gene mutation is capable of producing milk with only 1% fat; that would be 3.5 times less fat than whole milk. In addition, the milk is also high on omega-3 fatty acids which in recent years are being heralded for their health benefits. Butter created from the cow’s milk spreads as easily as margarine even when chilled.
Most importantly, the cow is able to transfer the mutated genes to her offspring meaning that it won’t be long before these low-fat producing cows will be found in farms worldwide.
This of course spells good news for Vialactia, a milk company that paid a mere $300 to buy the original cow. The company will probably get the most out of this cow, nicknamed Marge, since they stand to make some unbelievably large profits when commercialize it by 2011.
