Every year on April 22nd, nations around the world celebrate Earth Day. It is a day dedicated to celebrating our planet and making everyone aware of humanities impact on its fragile ecosystem. The United Nations also celebrate the coming of spring under the name Earth Day on the vernal (March) equinox. More than 500 million people in over 180 countries are staging events and projects to address local environmental issues during Earth Day but also the entire month of April known as Earth Month.
Wisconsin Governor Gaylord Nelson and Harvard University student Dennis Hayes celebrated the first Earth Day in 1970.
In recent years, Earth Day and its message have become extremely relevant as the world is starting to experience the effects of global warming and scientists warn that if we do not take action soon things will only become worst. Celebrate the day by participating in one of many different eco-friendly activities such as tree planting. Give mother Earth a break at home by reducing water usage and household waste. Reduce green house gas emissions by carpooling to work, using public transportation, walking or riding a bicycle. Turn off your computer when you are not using it and replace the traditional incandescent light bulbs in your house with the more energy efficient compact fluorescent bulbs. Australia and some Canadian provinces such as Ontario have already announced their plans to phase out the use of incandescent bulbs over the next few years in an effort to combat global warming.
Today is Earth Day so what are you doing to give our planet a break?
