How the Internet became Edwards’ best friend

The power of the Internet to disseminate information is well known and feared by some authoritative governments. In the U.S., one politician hoping to lead the Democratic Party to the White House next year has a new best friend and it is the Internet. After the announcement of the sad news that Elisabeth Edwards’ cancer had returned in an incurable form, online donations towards her husband’s John Edwards campaign soared by a whooping 50% passing the half a million mark. This of course is great news for Edwards who now has raised more than $1.7 million dollars since he started his campaign. The bad news is that he must raise nearly $100 million by the end of the year in order to compete in the early 2008 primaries.

Edwards’ top contender for the lead of the Democratic Party, New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton had no problem raising double that amount in less than one week after former President B. Clinton asked donors at the end of last month to help the Senator reach the $1 million mark.

If you are wondering how the other hopefuls compare to Edwards and Clinton, then you should check out ActBlue.com that keeps track of the donations made online for each candidate. Let me just say, the others are not even close to the two frontrunners.
