Guess who turns 50 today!

Osama bin LadenThe most wanted terrorist (according to the FBI) will be turning 50 today assuming that he is still alive. Osama (or is it Usama) bin Laden, the leader of al Qaeda was born this day in 1957. The man is responsible for a number of terrorist attacks against U.S. targets that have caused the deaths of at least 200 people. Bin Laden is also wanted in connection to the 9 / 11 terrorist attacks in New York.

Osama was born in Riyadh, the son of Mohammed bin Laden, a Yemeni construction magnate and the patriarch of what is though to be the wealthiest non-royal family in Saudi Arabia. Osama was the 17 th out of 55 children that Mohammed fathered during his life.

The whereabouts of bin Laden are not currently known. Last time we saw a video tape of him was more than 2 years ago. Some speculate that he might be already dead while others say that he is probably hiding in the mountain region along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border. Taliban leaders are convinced that his is alive and kicking and so they celebrated his birthday praying for his health and longevity. Of course, it could also be that the Taliban are simply perpetrating the myth that he is alive in order to inspire their followers.

Don’t expect that bin Laden, if alive, would be celebrating his birthday is raucous fashion. For one, Muslim fundamentalists do not acknowledge birthdays considering nothing but a decadent Western construct. In addition, bin Laden once declared that music is “the flute of the devil,” so you know that one is out even if he celebrates.

One thing is for sure. If the guy is still alive then one lucky person can sure hit the jackpot by giving the FBI information that can lead to his success. The United States has announced a $25 million reward for information that will lead to the arrest or death of bin Laden.
