Need a speed boost? Doing uphill and downhill sprinting in the same workout increases your flatland speed. Researchers at the University of Athens put athletes through a 6-week training program over slopping and flat ground-they ran uphill, downhill, over flat ground, or an uphill-downhill combination.

The combo runners increased their sprint speed by 3.5 percent; others did not improve. The transitions between the two slopes improved the sprinters’ neuromuscular systems, increasing their stride rate, according to study author Giorgios Paradisis, Ph.D. Run like the fast group for 12 40-meter sprints on a 3-degree slope, three times a week.
