The title of this post is probably a bit more dramatic than it should be but Tony Blair declared during his speech at the House of Commons that he plans to further reduce the number of U.K. troops in IRAQ. In fact, he will be removing up to 1,600 soldiers from IRAQ in the next few months and likely reduce the total number to less than 5,000 before the end of summer.
The U.K. has as many as 40,000 soldiers in IRAQ when the war started but has been scaling back the numbers in the last couple of years. Blair feels that the troops have done their job securing most of IRAQ with the exception of Baghdad that is continuing to be a hotbed for insurrection activity. Blair feels that the new Iraqi security forces are near capable of keeping the peace in the country while the remaining U.K. military will continue to train them.
Blair’s announcement is in direct contrast to Bush’s who wants to send an additional 21,000 soldiers in an effort to secure Baghdad. Other countries such as Denmark with a smaller military presence in the Middle East have also begun pulling their troops out of the region.
