No time to hit the gym? Think again.

Have time for Monday Night Football, The Daily Show, or Lost? Tally up the number of hours you spend in front of the tube each week and you will probably find more than a measly hour and a half for the gym. Saying you have no time is bogus “because it assumes that everything else in your life is more important than staying in shape,” says Jeffrey Davidson, author of The 60-Second Procrastinator. Find a gym with cable TV and plant yourself on a cardio machine for the first quarter of an NBA game, skip a sitcom rerun for a weight workout, and free up your final half hour by investing in TiVo. You won’t miss a show while exercising, and you will save 20 minutes per hour of programming by zapping commercials.

Even better, we are going to make it even easier for you never to miss a workout. If you are having fitting in three or four workouts every week, just cut your gym days down to 2. Sounds too good to be true? Don’t get us wrong. A 4-day routine will lead to bigger gains faster. But a 2-day plan will still let you build muscle, and has the added benefit of increasing your recovery time between sessions. “Plus, if you are hitting the gym only twice a week, it should give you an extra layer of motivation to make those days truly count,” says Mike Mejia, C.S.C.S., author of The Better Body Blueprint. So if you are pressed for time, plan for one trip to the gym on the weekend, and squeeze in a second near the middle of the week. Mejia recommends doing a full-body routine on both days to ensure you make the most of your time.
