Students in Canadian postsecondary institutions took action today against increasing tuition fees and mounting debt. The students gathered in large groups in several of Canada’s major cities demanding that the government take action to make postsecondary education more affordable.

Tuition fees vary across all provinces with Quebec charging the lowest at roughly $1,900 for an undergraduate degree while a similar program in Nova Scotia costs over $5,500. Tuition fees have continuously increased during the last 10 years. Students are often faced with a large debt upon graduation that they may not be able to pay off depending on the job market conditions. Student debt varies from $10,000 to $100,000 in some cases.

The federal government is taking some first steps in an effort to keep postsecondary education accessible, accountable and affordable for Canadians. Bill C-398 (known as the Canada postsecondary education act) recently received a first reading in the House of Commons.
